Federer advances to Dubai Open final
Roger Federer beat Tommy Haas in straight sets, 6-4, 7-5, to reach his fifth straight Dubai Open final in the United Arab Emirates. Federer will face Mikhail Youzhny, who reached his second straight tournament final by beating Sweden's Robin Soderling, 7-5, 6-2.
ATP Tennis Channel Open -- Top-seeded James Blake was removed from the quarterfinals in Las Vegas after ATP Tour officials reversed a ruling that had allowed him to advance due to a competitor's withdrawal during round-robin play. Evgeny Korolev took Blake's place against Sam Querrey.
WTA Qatar Open -- Top-seeded Justine Henin rallied to beat fourth-seeded Jelena Jankovic of Serbia, 6-7 (5), 6-2, 6-4, to advance to the final in Doha, Qatar. Henin will play today against second-seeded Svetlana Kuznetsova.

Speight, ex-forward with N.C. State, dies
Former North Carolina State forward Bobby Speight has died after a battle with cancer. Speight, who led the Wolfpack to consecutive Southern Conference championships in 1951 and 1952, died Thursday night in Richmond, Va. He was 76.
Gonzaga -- Reserve player Theo Davis has been charged with misdemeanor possession of marijuana stemming from his arrest with starting center Josh Heytvelt after a traffic stop in Cheney, Wash., last month. Cheney city prosecutor Julie McKay said that the 21-year-old Davis, from Brampton, Ontario, will be mailed a citation and court summons. Davis, a freshman who did not play this year because of shoulder surgery, was a passenger in a sport-utility vehicle Heytvelt was driving on Feb. 9. Officers found part of a marijuana cigarette in Davis' pocket.

'Saint' is invited to $1M Dubai race
Trainer Michael Trombetta said he will talk to Sweetnorthernsaint's owners next week about accepting an invitation to the Grade II, $1 million Godolphin Mile in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Trombetta said The Saint also was invited to the Dubai World Cup, but declined, because at the time of the invitation Horse of the Year Invasor and Grade I winner Discreet Cat were both scheduled to race in the $6 million race. "We're thinking about the Mile," Trombetta said by phone yesterday. Trombetta said if Sweetnorthernsaint is going, he will have to be sprayed for two weeks with a specific insecticide and he'll have to be on the plane March 20 with his groom.

Montoya has top lap for Busch race
Juan Pablo Montoya showed off his road-racing expertise in Mexico City, topping the speed chart in a practice session for the NASCAR Busch Series' Telcel-Motorola 200. Montoya, who jumped from Formula One to NASCAR last season, averaged 104.180 mph on his fastest lap on the curvy, 2.518-mile Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez course.
