"I won't grow up, I don't want to wear a tie, and a serious expression, in the middle of July" - that's what the Lost Boys sang in the musical Peter Pan, and that pretty much sums up the position of the anti-hero of Little Children.
But everything in this hapless, rhythmless film happens in the narrative equivalent of a sing-song, not a rousing Broadway number. Brad Adamson (Patrick Wilson), known to playground mothers as the Prom King, is a college jock who won a smart beauty named Kathy (Jennifer Connelly), went to law school and hasn't yet passed the bar. He spends the summer in their pretty New England town doing everything except hitting the books.
Little Children (New Line Cinema) Starring Kate Winslet, Patrick Wilson, Jackie Earle Haley. Directed by Todd Field. Rated R. Time 130 minutes.
