It's melting now, but Marylanders became way too familiar last week with the sort of ice that falls from the sky. Hugh Silcox in Baltimore was confused by a forecast that promised "little or no sleet accumulation; ice accumulation around one-quarter inch." He asks, "How else could sleet accumulate, if not as ice?" Sleet consists of ice pellets, and piles up much like snow. "Ice" in that forecast refers to freezing rain, which falls as rain and freezes on contact, accumulating like the glaze on a doughnut.
