A daring look at hip-hop

An image of a man swiping a credit card on the backside of a scantily clad woman. A performer boasting about how he and his buddies like to slap women around - though using much more derogatory terms than "women" to describe their victims. Scene after scene of women writhing on their knees before bare-chested, swaggering men waving fistfuls of cash.

This is the world of hip-hop and rap music that Byron Hurt, a 36-year-old black filmmaker from Boston, seeks to expose and explain in Hip-Hop: Beyond Beats and Rhymes, a daring documentary premiering tonight on PBS.
