Fort Lauderdale, Fla. -- The Orioles signed Jamie Walker, a 35-year-old left-handed reliever, to a three-year, $12 million deal in the offseason. In response, his former Detroit Tigers teammate, Todd Jones, said of the Tennessee native: "$12 million is a lot of money, but $12 million in Tennessee? He might as well be Donald Trump. That's a lot of generic-brand beer, and a lot of NASCAR tickets. You know how many fishing lures you can buy at Wal-Mart with $12 million?"
What do Orioles fans need to know about Jamie Walker? -- Well, I am humble. I am kind of down to earth. I like to relax. We live in a fast-paced world and I try to slow things down. That's pretty much it and mainly, I'll be there every day.
Do you have a reaction to Todd Jones comments about your contract? -- Yeah, he's just busting my [chops]. But I've got something for him, definitely. He's an Alabaman obviously, and when we flush our toilets, that's where they run to, his house. I thought it was funny, but I don't drink generic beer. I drink Budweiser, man.
What Orioles are you most looking forward to meeting? -- I'd like to meet Boog Powell, Cal Ripken Jr., obviously, Jim Palmer. I'd like to pick [Palmer's] brain. I've still got an old Orioles' Skoal hat. I should have brought the darn thing, but I used to wear it around. When I was a kid growing up, they were one of the best teams.
You're a Tennessee guy. Were you pulling for University of Tennessee alum Peyton Manning in the Super Bowl? -- Yeah, I wanted to see him win because obviously, the guy is good. His thing was he never could win the big game and he finally did. But I also like the Ravens though. They took my man [Steve] McNair. He is a hell of a guy. You are not going to find a better person than Steve McNair.
One of your favorite hobbies is hunting. What's your biggest prize? -- I caught a big elk a couple of years ago. It was a 6-by-6 elk. I went hunting with [former Detroit Tigers] catcher Lance Parrish in New Mexico. That's my biggest one. I am a meat hunter. If it fits in a skillet, I kill it. I eat everything I kill.
