Dr. Charles Frederick Hobelmann Sr., former chief of anesthesiology at Union Memorial Hospital, died Wednesday of pneumonia at the Broadmead retirement community. He was 86.
Dr. Hobelmann was born in Baltimore and raised in Forest Park. He was a graduate of Forest Park High School and earned a bachelor's degree from the Johns Hopkins University in 1942.
After graduating in 1944 from an accelerated class at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, he enlisted in the Navy, where he attained the rank of lieutenant and served as a physician at the Norfolk, Va., naval base.
After the war, he completed training in anesthesiology at the University of Pennsylvania and began his career at Union Memorial in 1949.
At the time of his retirement in 1985, he was chief of anesthesiology at Union Memorial Hospital and the University of Maryland's Hospital for Children.
The longtime resident of Phoenix in Baltimore County, who moved to the retirement community in 1993, enjoyed working in stained glass.
He was also an accomplished woodworker who liked to build furniture. He enjoyed playing golf and traveling.
"Charlie will be forever remembered for his beautiful sky-blue eyes, white wavy hair and his big, friendly smile that he had for all," said JoAnne Hobelmann, a daughter-in-law, of Charlesbrooke in Baltimore County.
His wife of 28 years, the former Mary Louise O'Donnell, died in 1972.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Feb. 8 at Broadmead, 13801 York Road.
Also surviving are his wife of 33 years, the former Eleanor Green; two sons, Dr. Charles F. "Coke" Hobelmann Jr. of Charlesbrooke and J. Paul Hobelmann of Darnestown; four daughters, Sally L. Hodge, Jean P. Hurley and Carol A. Hobelmann, all of Ellicott City, and M. Ruth Brinck of Harrisburg, Pa.; 12 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
