Slayton House to celebrate 40 years; volunteers needed

Slayton House will celebrate its 40th birthday this summer with a "Fabulous at 40" Birthday Bash sponsored by Wilde Lake Community Association.

The event, to be held June 16-17, will include entertainment, food, games, a historic-home tour and a dedication.


Volunteers are needed to help coordinate the event. The first meeting for volunteers will be held from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Feb. 26 at Slayton House.

Oakland Nights concert is Feb. 9

Oakland Nights Music Series, sponsored by the Town Center Community Association, will present a performance by singer Samantha Hammer Kadrmas and pianist Kirk Kadish from 8 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Feb. 9 in the ballroom at Historic Oakland, 5430 Vantage Point Road.

Kadrmas is a singer with the U.S. Army Field Band. Kadish will perform tunes from musicals.

Admission is free, but donations for the artists are welcome.

Volunteers sought -- In response to the closing of the Giant Food store in Wilde Lake Village Center, the village board has established the Wilde Lake Village Center Partnership Committee and is seeking volunteers to serve on the panel. Vince Marando, 410-730- 1821.


Laughter workout -- Howard County Department of Recreation and Parks will sponsor "Another Way to See It," a laughter club for those ages 55 and older. The program includes laughter exercises. The club meets from 9 a.m. to 9:40 a.m. Mondays at the Bain Center, 5470 Ruth Keeton Way. The cost is $2 a class. 410-313-7279.

Free games -- Slayton House on Wilde Lake Village Green offers drop-in bridge games Tuesdays, Scrabble on Wednesdays and a chance to bring a game to play Thursdays. The free sessions are held from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. the second and fourth weeks of each month. Drop-in mah-jongg for ages 18 and older is offered at Slayton House on Wednesday mornings. Bridge -- Ruth-Anne Mazer, American Contract Bridge League certified director and Gold Life Master, will teach bridge for beginners from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Tuesdays, through Feb. 27, at the Bain Center. The cost is $46. "Bid and Play," a class in bidding, play and defense techniques will be offered from 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesdays, through Feb. 13, at the Bain Center. Mah-jongg -- Slayton House in Wilde Lake Village Center is offering drop-in mah-jongg classes Wednesday mornings for adults ages 18 and older. Participants are welcome to bring a game and a friend. Tap dance -- Judy Templeton offers Razz-A-Ma-Tap dance classes for boys at 5 p.m. Thursdays at Slayton House in Wilde Lake Village Center. The eight-week series will include tap technique, drills and basic combinations. Classes began last week.

Brian Best and Judy Templeton teach techniques of musical theater for adults from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Thursdays, starting this week. There is a fee. 410-772-9448.


Monthly crafts -- Howard County Department of Recreation and Parks will sponsor a Jewelry-a-Month Club, for those ages 55 and older who want to learn how to make jewelry, from 9:30 a.m. to noon Feb. 5 and March 5 at the Bain Center, 5470 Ruth Keeton Way.
