Woman dies at hospital after blaze in Westport
A woman died last night at Harbor Hospital after she was rescued by firefighters from her burning home in Westport, a city Fire Department spokesman said.
The 68-year-old woman, whose name was withheld pending notification of family members, suffered burns and smoke inhalation and died before 9 p.m., said Chief Kevin Cartwright, the spokesman.
Reported at 7 p.m., the single-alarm fire caused extensive damage to the two-story dwelling in the 2600 block of Ridgely St.
Firefighters found the woman, the only occupant of the house, unconscious in a smoke-filled first-floor rear room. She had gone into cardiac arrest, Cartwright said.
The cause of the fire was under investigation. It was the second fire-related death in the city this year, compared with one at the same time last year, Cartwright said.

Beth El senior rabbi to retire in 2008
Mark G. Loeb, senior rabbi of Pikesville's Beth El Congregation, has announced plans to retire next year.
Loeb, who will turn 63 next month, has held his position at Beth El for 31 years.
The Boston native said he is exploring his post-retirement possibilities, including serving as an interim rabbi for synagogues affiliated with the Conservative movement, perhaps in Europe. He is also considering teaching.
"Managers of opera companies say it's so much better when people say 'so soon?' rather than 'at last,' " he said. "I don't want to hang on too long where I don't feel that I'm giving my best at all times."
The congregation's board of trustees is expected to vote to select a successor next month.
