Hospital schedules workshop on babies
Howard County General Hospital's community health education program will present "Happiest Baby on the Block," a workshop on how to soothe crying newborns and promote more restful sleep.
The program, endorsed by the American Academy of Pediatrics, is designed for parents of babies up to 3 months old. It will be held from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Feb. 7 at the hospital's Wellness Center, Suite L-9 of the Columbia Medical Center, 11055 Little Patuxent Parkway.
The cost is $50 a couple.
A prenatal class for parents to be in the first three months of pregnancy will be held from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Wellness Center. Admission is free.

Contraception focus of health seminar
Dr. Kimberly Moran Turner and Laura Burnham will present "What's New in Contraception," a seminar in Turner's "What Every Woman Should Know" health series, at 7 p.m. Feb. 26 at Hawthorn Center, 6175 Sunny Spring, in Hickory Ridge village.

Flu vaccinations -- Howard County Health Department says there is time to be vaccinated against influenza. The flu season runs from October through mid-March. Doses of vaccine are available for all who have not been immunized. To schedule an appointment to receive the vaccine, call:

Aquatic fitness -- Aquatic fitness classes are offered by Central Maryland Rehabilitation Center at the Howard Community College pool. Sessions are held Monday and Friday afternoons. The cost is $5 a class. 410-312-9000.
Losing weight -- Individualized weight-loss counseling with a registered dietitian is offered by Howard County General Hospital from 9:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays. Appointments, which cost $25 for a half-hour visit, must be scheduled in advance. 410-740-7601.
Gentle yoga -- Yoga Center of Columbia is holding gentle-yoga classes for seniors from noon to 1:30 p.m. Thursdays, through Feb. 15, at Slayton House in Wilde Lake Village Center. The classes emphasize breathing and stress reduction and will be adapted to the needs of the students. All levels of experience are welcome. The cost for a six-week session is $78; $15 to drop in. Qi gong -- Wilde Lake Community Association will sponsor a 10-week session of qi gong classes, taught by Karl Ardo of Moving in Stillness LLC, at 9:30 a.m. Saturdays, Feb. 3 through March 10, at Slayton House in Wilde Lake Village Center. A free class will be offered tomorrow. The movements of the discipline, which is believed to help maintain health, increase vitality and speed recovery from illness, are appropriate for all age groups and for the physically challenged. Workshop -- Tai Sophia Institute, 7750 Montpelier Road, North Laurel, will offer "Whole Food Nutrition in Life and in Clinical Practice," a workshop exploring the science, principles and benefits of a whole-foods diet from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Feb. 24. Dr. Susan Lord, adjunct professor at Georgetown University School of Medicine and associate director of professional education and director of nutrition programs for the Center for Mind-Body Medicine, will discuss psychological and emotional relationships with food, ways to eat "mindfully" and ways to teach mindful eating. Health care -- Chase Brexton Health Services Inc. has opened its third Maryland site at 5500 Knoll North Drive in Oakland Mills village. The center plans to provide insured, uninsured and underinsured children and adults with primary and preventive care, and mental health and case-management services. It will be the first Chase Brexton location to offer consultations in integrative medicine, combining conventional and complementary therapies.
