BALTIMORE CITY COUNCIL -- Baltimore City Council will meet at 5 p.m. in the council chambers in City Hall, 100 N. Holliday St. A new council president and vice president are to be elected.

HARFORD SCHOOLS -- Harford County Board of Education will hold a business meeting at 7:15 p.m. at 102 S. Hickory Ave., Bel Air. The agenda includes action on the 2008 budget and on charter school applications.


BALTIMORE CITY SCHOOLS -- The Baltimore City Board of School Commissioners will meet at 6 p.m. at 200 E. North Ave. It is expected to receive school closure recommendations.


HOWARD SCHOOL BOARD -- Howard County Board of Education will meet at 4 p.m. and at 7:30 p.m. in the boardroom at the Department of Education, 10910 Route 108, Ellicott City. A hearing will be held at the 7:30 p.m. session on a proposal to acquire 41 acres on Marriottsville Road. 410-313-7194.

ROBESON TALK -- Paul Robeson Jr. will speak at 7 p.m. at the Enoch Pratt Free Library's Wheeler Auditorium, 400 Cathedral St. He will discuss his new book, A Black Way of Seeing: From "Liberty" to Freedom, as part of the Eddie and Sylvia Brown Lecture Series.


PETS EXPO -- The World of Pets Expo will be held from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Maryland State Fairground, 2200 York Road, Timonium. It will continue from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. Adult admission is $8. 410-374-5964 or

POLAR BEAR PLUNGE -- The 11th annual Maryland State Police Polar Bear Plunge for Special Olympics will take place at 2 p.m. at Sandy Point State Park off U.S. 50/301 near Annapolis. Registration will begin at 11 a.m., and participants are required to bring a minimum of $50 in pledges. Admission for spectators is free.


WINTER HIKE -- There will be a winter tree and shrub hike from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. at Otter Point Creek, 700 Otter Point Road, Abingdon. Ages 8 to adult can take a free hike with a naturalist. Registration is requested. 410-612-1688.
