Va. Tech turns pain to gain

The Baltimore Sun

Blacksburg, Va. -- Instead of celebrating his team's shocking overtime win at Duke earlier this month, Virginia Tech sophomore guard A.D. Vassallo headed home to mourn - again.

He drove about 90 miles from campus to Lynchburg, Va., where Becky Carwile, his host mother, died from cancer last season. Vassallo, a native of Puerto Rico, lived with the Carwiles while attending high school and prep school. After a 69-67 upset of the Blue Devils - the program's first victory at Cameron Indoor Stadium -Vassallo went home for the anniversary of her death.
