Chilean fishing boat rescues Calif. sailor near Cape Horn

PUNTA ARENAS, Chile -- As the Chilean fishing trawler began a 500-mile trip to port with rescued Newport Beach, Calif., sailor Ken Barnes, details emerged about a harrowing three days alone near Cape Horn on his disabled 44-foot ketch, Privateer.

"It was wild inside the boat," said Barnes from the Polar Pesca I, the fishing boat that rescued him early yesterday. Pictures taken from a military aircraft before the rescue showed Barnes wearing yellow foul-weather gear and waving at rescuers from his boat.

Punta Arenas naval chief Ivan Valenzuela said Barnes experienced tough conditions, including 3 feet of water inside the boat.
