King celebration to be held Jan. 14
The Martin Luther King Jr. Howard County Holiday Commission will present the county's 22nd Commemorative Celebration of the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. at 3:30 p.m. Jan. 14 in Smith Theatre at Howard Community College, 10901 Little Patuxent Parkway, Columbia.
Walter B. Hill Jr., senior archivist and subject area specialist for Afro-American history at the University of Maryland, will discuss the holdings of the National Archives that focus on the life of King.
Gigi Barnett, a reporter for WJZ-TV, will be master of ceremonies.
Cash awards will be given to students who entered the Martin Luther King Essay Contest.
The Spry Sisters and SGI Women African Drummers will perform. Noor Oweis, a 10th-grader, will read an essay about King. The program is to end with the singing of "We Shall Overcome."
Refreshments will be served. The celebration is free and open to the public, but seating is limited. The college is handicap accessible.

Luncheon planned with legislators
The League of Women Voters of Howard County will hold its annual luncheon with the county delegation to the General Assembly at 11:30 a.m. tomorrow in the auditorium at Bethany United Methodist Church, 2875 Bethany Lane, Ellicott City. There will be an opportunity to ask questions.

King breakfast to be held Sunday
The Alpha Foundation of Howard County Inc. will hold its 32nd Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Breakfast to celebrate King's vision and legacy. The breakfast will be held Sunday at Martin's West.
Darryl R. Matthews Sr. will speak. The theme will be "Reviving the Dream: What Would Martin Want Us to Do?"
Tickets are $37, and $23 for children to age 12. Proceeds will help fund scholarships, leadership development and mentoring programs for African-American students in Howard County.

Ulman to discuss transportation
County Executive Ken Ulman will discuss transportation in Howard County at the next meeting of the Transportation Advocates, to be held from 7:45 a.m. to 9 a.m. Tuesday at the Bain Center, 5470 Ruth Keeton Way, Columbia.

Benefit trip set to Arena Stage
The Council of Elders of the Black Community of Howard County will sponsor a trip to see the August Wilson play Gem of the Ocean at Washington's Arena Stage. The group will attend a matinee performance at 2 p.m. March 3. A bus will leave from the Columbia area at noon March 3.
Tickets for the fundraiser are $70, including transportation. A nonrefundable deposit of $25 is required; the balance must be paid by Feb. 1. Proceeds will be used for the council's school programs for African-American students, Elders in the Schools.

ACS to discuss philanthropy
The Association of Community Services will discuss "A Portrait of Philanthropy: Howard Legacy Study," at its meeting from noon to 1:30 p.m. Jan. 17 at the Meeting House in Oakland Mills Village Center, 5885 Robert Oliver Place, Columbia.
The study identifies the capacity for bequest-making in the county and is designed to assist Howard County nonprofit groups in encouraging bequests as a financial resource. Board members of local nonprofit organizations are encouraged to attend.

Christmas trees can be recycled
Options for recycling Christmas tree are being offered through the county government's Merry Mulch program. The recycled trees will made into compost and mulch, saving valuable space at the county's landfill.
Christmas trees can be recycled between 7:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. seven days a week, through Jan. 19, at drop-off sites around the county.
