CHRIS HAYWARD, 81 Television writer

Chris Hayward, an Emmy Award-winning writer who helped develop the bumbling animated Canadian Mountie Dudley Do-Right and other offbeat characters for The Rocky and Bullwinkle Show, died of cancer Nov. 20 in Beverly Hills, Calif.

Besides Bullwinkle the moose and his friend, Rocky the flying squirrel, the hit show -- which is still in syndication -- featured segments including Mr. Peabody, a time-traveling dog with a pet boy named Sherman, and Dudley Do-Right, a klutzy mounted policeman always in pursuit of his nemesis, Snidely Whiplash. Mr. Hayward later helped create The Munsters.
