Phillip E. Neary, 71

Phillip E. Neary, a retired benefits administrator and sports fan, died Sunday of complications from Parkinson's disease at his Glen Burnie home. He was 71.

Mr. Neary was born in Baltimore and raised on East Lanvale Street. He was a 1953 graduate of City College and earned a bachelor's degree in business administration from the University of Baltimore in 1958, and a law degree there in 1964.

For 29 years, Mr. Neary was the administrator of employee benefits at General Motors' Broening Highway plant. He left there in 1988 to become benefits manager at Franklin Square Hospital Center. He retired in 1992.

Mr. Neary had served on the board of what is now Harbor Hospital, and from 1977 to 1988 was a board member and president of the Maryland Health Care for All! Coalition. During the 1970s and 1980s, he was on several governor's commissions relating to health care issues.

He was a Colts, Orioles and Ravens fan, and enjoyed shooting pool, family members said.

Services will be held at 11:30 a.m. tomorrow at Fink Funeral Home, 426 Crain Highway SW, Glen Burnie.

Surviving are his wife of 31 years, the former Alice M. Gregory; two sons, Patrick Wedra of Whiteford and Timothy Wedra of Bel Air; a daughter, Veronica Kline of Bel Air; a brother, Thomas Neary of Millville, Del.; a sister, Katherine Kunkle of Tampa, Fla.; and nine grandchildren.
