FOOTBALL
OFFENSIVE PLAYER
Scott Noble
Franklin
The senior running back led the Indians to their best season since 1994, when they went to the state quarterfinals. Noble, 6 feet and 200 pounds, rushed for 1,765 yards and 29 touchdowns to lead the Indians (10-3) to the Class 3A North regional title, a berth in the state semifinals and a No. 8 ranking in The Sun's top 15. Noble, who also starred as a linebacker, scored the game-winning touchdown in Franklin's 7-6 victory over previously unbeaten and then-No. 2-ranked City (11-1) in the regional final.

The senior defensive back intercepted five passes and recovered two fumbles for the Gators, whom he led to their third consecutive Baltimore County 4A-3A crown and their second straight runner-up finish in the Class 4A North region. In big games, coach Nick Arminio said he often called upon Mattison to cover the opponents' top receiver. Mattison, also the team's quarterback, rushed for 227 yards and 12 touchdowns and passed for 1,359 yards and 13 touchdowns.

COACH OF THE YEAR
Brian Abbott
Loyola
The fifth-year coach led Loyola to a share of its third Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference title since 1997, and its second crown during his tenure. The Dons tied a single-season school record for victories at 10-1 overall, and also won their fourth straight game against Calvert Hall -- and their 18th in the past 22 meetings -- to improve their lead to 46-33-8 in the 87-year-old Turkey Bowl series. Abbott's offensive leader on a team with no superstars was sophomore quarterback Leon Kinnard, who rushed for 11 touchdowns and passed for 11.
VOLLEYBALL
PLAYER OF THE YEAR
Marah Schmitz
Dulaney
No one else in the county had an all-around game to match Schmitz's. The 5-foot-7 outside hitter excelled all over the court. The senior hit with power, unleashed a mighty jump serve, passed with precision and dug up seemingly impossible returns. The repeat County Player of the Year averaged 3.6 kills and 4.07 digs per game in leading the No. 7 Lions (15-2) to the county title. She posted a .513 hitting percentage, a statistic similar to a batting average.
COACH OF THE YEAR
Dorothy Gill
Catonsville
In her first season as head coach, Gill took the Comets to the county title game and to the state semifinals for the first time since 1995. The No. 10 Comets finished 17-3 after falling to eventual state champion and No. 1 Centennial in a five-game semifinal. Gill, who spent three years as a Comets assistant, fostered a strong team approach and gave credit to her players, saying they were determined to get to the state tournament after falling to Towson three years in a row.

BOYS SOCCER
PLAYER OF THE YEAR
Andrew Bulls
McDonogh
Gifted with a high skill level when he first transferred to McDonogh last year, Bulls added new layers to his game this season as a junior, leading the No. 3 Eagles (15-4-1) to a runner-up finish in the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference.
The center midfielder finished with 15 goals and 17 assists, and, just as important, became a leader and calming influence on a young team.
COACH OF THE YEAR
Peter Glaudemans
Eastern Tech
In his 15th season as head coach at Eastern Tech, Glaudemans led the Mavericks to a 13-5-1 mark and a 1-0 win over Loch Raven in the county title game - the program's fourth championship since 2001.
Glaudemans, who has guided the Mavericks to three state tournament appearances in the past five years, is 134-85-6 at the school, with 45 of the losses coming in the first five years. Eastern Tech advanced to the Class 2A North regional title game, falling to eventual state runner-up Loch Raven in a rematch of the county title game.

GIRLS SOCCER
PLAYER OF THE YEAR
Girls soccer
Ali Brennan
McDonogh
The 5-foot-11 sophomore left defender brought size, skill and athleticism to the back line and also made an impact pressing forward. She had one goal and eight assists as the No. 5 Eagles (13-5-3) reached the Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland A Conference semifinals.
In her second season of varsity and first as a starter, Brennan continually got to the ball first and was particularly strong in the air, playing a major role as part of a defense that yielded just nine goals in 21 games this fall.
COACH OF THE YEAR
Mike Parker
Loch Raven
In his eighth season at Loch Raven, Parker led the No. 13 Raiders to a 12-4-3 season, including a share of the Baltimore County title and a state semifinal appearance. After playing 100 minutes of scoreless soccer against Eastern Tech in the county championship game, the Raiders made the most of a second opportunity against their rivals with a 2-1 win that eared them the Class 2A North regional championship.
Parker, who is 91-36-9 in his eight seasons, has guided Loch Raven to three of the program's five state championships.

Field Hockey
PLAYER OF THE YEAR
Poppy Hall
Garrison Forest
Hall had a knack for moving the ball down field with ease, reading the defense and moving quickly to create scoring chances for herself or her teammates. She could thwart most defenders with her finesse, field sense and a knack for knowing when her teammates would make their moves.
Always steady and unflappable, the senior had scored 14 goals and 12 assists as the No. 4 Grizzlies went 18-3 and reached the IAAM A Conference final.
COACH OF THE YEAR
Karen Masoner
Dulaney
In her fourth season as head coach, Masoner guided the Lions to the county crown and to their third trip to the state tournament in four years. They avenged an earlier loss to C. Milton Wright in the regional final but fell 1-0 to South River in the title game.
Masoner (48-12-2) credited the leadership of her core players with energizing the team, but she has also built confidence among the Lions, who have continued to get better during her tenure.

GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY
RUNNER O FTHE YEAR
Kristen Malloy
Hereford
Malloy had a strong sophomore year that was blemished only by a third-place finish at the Class 2A state meet. Her best performance probably came at the Bull Run Invitational earlier in the season. That's where she ran a record time of 18 minutes, 40 seconds on her home course.
Malloy also turned in an impressive performance by winning the Barnhart Invitational earlier in the season.
COACH OF THE YEAR
Chad Boyle
Dulaney
Boyle's Lions overcame some injury problems and inexperience at spots to have another successful season.
Dulaney rebounded from tying with Hereford for the Baltimore County title by crushing the competition the next week to win the Class 4A North regional title. The Lions then finished second in the state meet.

Boys cross country
RUNNER OF THE YEAR
Dwight Parker
Woodlawn
The senior had another season filled with strong performances. He won the Baltimore County and Class 4A North regional championships for a third straight season.
After that, he came in second to repeat champion Matt Centrowitz in the state title race. Parker had missed last year's state championship race due to a family vacation.
COACH OF THE YEAR
Ed Faya
Towson
Faya guided the Generals to the school's first county title since 1974. Towson ended Dulaney's six-year run as county champion with a solid effort in the title race.
Faya's group beat the Lions by 15 points that day in a race the Generals had been pointing to throughout the season. The Generals then won the Class 3A North regional championship a week later. Faya is in his fifth year as coach and had run for Perry Hall under longtime coach Jerry Martin during his high school days.
