FALL ALL-METRO VARSITY

The Baltimore Sun

FIRST TEAM OFFENSE

Alex Boddiford

Loyola, lineman

The three-year starter cleared the way for an offense that generated more than 3,100 yards. The 6-foot-4, 270-pound senior team captain was effective both as a run and pass blocker, serving a catalyst for quarterback Leon Kinnard's 11 passing touchdowns and 11 rushing touchdowns.

Boddiford also played well defensively, with five tackles behind the line of scrimmage, a sack and a safety. Navy, Army, Richmond and William & Mary have expressed interest.

Travis Brown

Havre de Grace, wide receiver

The 6-foot-2, 175-pound speedster made 59 receptions for 1,147 yards and 11 touchdowns in leading the Warriors to the Class 1A North regional title and a No. 15 area ranking.

Also a defensive back who had six interceptions, the senior had perhaps his best overall game in the Warriors' 22-15 upset of then-No. 11 New Town, during which he caught a 39-yard touchdown pass, intercepted three passes and recovered an onside kick.

Zach Brown

Wilde Lake, running back

After 10 regular-season games, Brown led the area with 1,537 yards and 20 touchdowns, earning Howard County Offensive Player of the Year honors. Brown, a 6-foot-2, 220-pound senior who runs a 4.51-second 40-yard dash, had one of his best games in a victory over last year's county co-champion Long Reach, when he rushed for 198 yards, scored twice and made 12 tackles.

Brown helped Wilde Lake win its last six games to go 8-2, but it missed the Class 3A East regional playoffs. He also is a first-team All-Metro selection in outdoor track and wrestling.

Rob Ciancaglini

Broadneck, lineman

The three-year starter was a key reason the Bruins bounced back from a 4-6 season in 2005. Ciancaglini's focus and leadership as the fifth-ranked Bruins' center helped Broadneck go 11-2 and win the Class 4A East regional title.

Ciancaglini, a 6-foot-1, 225-pound senior, was voted by the Annapolis Touchdown Club as the winner of the Al Laramore Award, which is bestowed upon Anne Arundel County's best lineman. He also throws the shot put in indoor track and plays lacrosse.

Les Delmont

Hereford, lineman

The 6-foot-5, 330-pound senior was an imposing and unflappable centerpiece for the 11th-ranked Bulls, who put together a 10-game winning streak en route to winning their eighth Baltimore County 2A-1A League title and reaching the 2A North region championship game.

Delmont made 12 pancake blocks and gave up only two sacks throughout the season. Delmont has been offered a full scholarship to West Virginia Tech.

Jared Jorgensen

McDonogh, quarterback

The senior left-hander took the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference by storm in his first starting season. Jorgensen, 6 feet 2 and 180 pounds, completed 153 of 265 passes with 18 touchdowns, and Andrew Feinberg (68 receptions, 987 yards, 11 touchdowns) was his favorite target among the Eagles' four wide receivers.

Jorgensen found Feinberg for an 18-yard scoring pass to defeat league rival Gilman, 22-16, to forge a three-way tie for the MIAA A Conference title. Jorgensen is interested in Towson, Lafayette, William & Mary and Holy Cross.

FIRST TEAM OFFENSE

Chris McDermott

Broadneck, kicker

If the game is on the line, Bruins coach Jeff Herrick has no reservations about turning to McDermott. The senior made 12 field goals, with a long of 37 yards, to tie the state record for most field goals in a season.

The record was established by Urbana's Josh Brown in 1999 and equaled by McDermott and Arundel's Colin Blugis this season. McDermott set a county regular-season record with 11 field goals.

Scott Noble

Franklin, running back

Named The Sun's Baltimore County Offensive Player of the Year, Noble rushed for 1,765 yards and 29 touchdowns to lead the Indians (10-3) to their best season since 1994, when Franklin qualified for the state quarterfinals. In a 37-36 overtime victory over three-time county 4A-3A champion Perry Hall, Noble rushed for 202 yards and four touchdowns and made 12 tackles as a linebacker to end the Gators' 20-game winning streak against league rivals.

Noble, a 6-foot, 200-pound senior, also scored the game-winning touchdown in a 7-6 victory over then-No. 2 City in the Class 3A North regional final.

Zach Robinson

River Hill, lineman

The Hawks' top offensive lineman, Robinson, a left tackle, anchored a balanced offense that gained more than 4,000 total yards. Behind Robinson, Daniel Hostetler passed for more than 1,000 yards, and running backs Zach Martin and Michael Campanaro rushed for nearly 2,500 yards and more than 30 touchdowns.

The 6-foot-3, 295-pound senior is getting looks from a number of Ivy League and Patriot League programs.

Dajuan Smith

Edmondson, lineman

The 6-foot, 290-pound two-way tackle anchored a balanced offense in which quarterback Carroll Washington had 10 passing and six rushing touchdowns, and running back Tariq Jones, rushed for 1,951 yards and 16 touchdowns.

Defensively, Smith had 67 tackles -- 32 solo -- to go with 23 tackles for lost yardage, six sacks and 12 quarterback hurries to help Edmondson to the Class 2A state title.

Jake Trantin

Arch. Spalding, running back

The senior led the Cavaliers to an 11-0 record, a No. 4 ranking in The Sun and their second consecutive Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association B Conference title in dominant fashion. Named Anne Arundel County's Offensive Player of the Year, Trantin rushed for 1,094 yards and 11 touchdowns and also returned a kickoff for a score.

Trantin, 6 feet 1 and 220 pounds, won the Rhodes Trophy, which is awarded to the county's best player by the Annapolis Touchdown Club. For the second straight season, the linebacker led the Cavaliers in tackles (117).

FIRST TEAM DEFENSE

James Carmon

City, lineman

The 6-foot-7, 330-pound transfer from Overlea has excellent speed for his size along with the girth and technique to bull past offensive linemen's double teams. The junior had 14 sacks, disrupted 10 passes and recovered five fumbles for the Baltimore City champions, who went 11-1, shut out eight teams and allowed 31 points.

Maryland, Penn State and Virginia have expressed interest in Carmon, who had 11 tackles and two sacks in a 16-6 win over Class 2A state champion Edmondson.

Alvin Cox

Southside, linebacker

Cox had 15 sacks, caused seven fumbles, intercepted five passes and recovered five fumbles in leading the Jaguars to a runner-up finish in Baltimore City's Division II, as well as the program's first berth in the Class 1A South regional playoffs. Cox clocked a 4.65-second 40-yard dash and carries a 3.0 grade point average. As a fullback, Cox rushed for 545 yards and six touchdowns.

Eric Foote

Southern, linebacker

Foote, Anne Arundel County's Defensive Player of the Year, sparked wins over unbeaten Queen Anne's (20-12) and Wicomico (20-19), the latter for the Class 2A East regional crown on a game-winning touchdown. Foote earned his sixth sack and scored his 17th touchdown in a season-ending state semifinal loss to Edmondson.

The 6-foot-3, 250-pound senior clocked a 4.58-second 40-yard dash at Virginia Tech's camp, and has full scholarship offers from James Madison and Towson State. Also a running back, Foote rushed for 1,104 yards.

John Holland

Arundel, defensive back

Holland, 5 feet 9 and 155 pounds was a stalwart for the Wildcats, helping them to a 9-2 record and a berth in the Class 4A East regional playoffs.

The senior was a solid cover defender, and his 12 interceptions - three of which he returned for touchdowns - tied an Anne Arundel County record established by South River's Tommy Bresnahan in 1982. Two players, Edmondson's Dwayne Harvey (1984) and Forestville's Larry McClain (1995), hold the state record with 15.

Daniel Hostetler

River Hill, punter

Punting for accuracy, Hostetler averaged 36.0 yards per punt and often pinned opponents deep in their own territory. Athletic and versatile, Hostetler intercepted nine passes, caused a fumble and recovered a fumble.

As a quarterback, Hostetler, 6 feet 2 and 195 pounds, directed a high-scoring offense, passing for 18 touchdowns and 1,191 yards and rushing for 11 touchdowns to lead the Hawks to a Class 3A state runner-up finish during their best season in school history. The senior is considering Duke, West Virginia, Richmond and William & Mary.

Kyle Jackson

Edmondson, linebacker

The leading tackler for the Class 2A state finalist Red Storm, Jackson had 22 tackles for lost yardage, 11 deflected passes and 10 sacks. The senior also had four interceptions - one of which he returned 87 yards for a touchdown - and caused two fumbles.

A B-average student with a 295-pound bench press, the 6-foot-3, 230-pound Jackson clocked a 4.6-second 40 yard dash and had 13 receptions for 234 yards and two touchdowns as a tight end.

Jason Mattison

Perry Hall, defensive back

Mattison was called upon by coach Nick Arminio to cover the opposition's No. 1 receiver. He intercepted five passes and recovered two fumbles to lead the Gators to their third consecutive Baltimore County 4A-3A crown and their second straight runner-up finish in the 4A North region.

Mattison, a 6-foot, 180-pound senior, was also the Gators' quarterback, rushing for 227 yards and 12 touchdowns and passing for 1,359 yards and 13 touchdowns.

Sam Poggi

Gilman, linebacker

The third-year starting linebacker ranked second on the Greyhounds in tackles, with 16 going for lost yardage. Poggi, 6 feet 2 and 216 pounds, ran a 4.6-second 40-yard dash and had five sacks for the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference champion Greyhounds.

In one of his best games, the Duke-bound Poggi had six tackles and a fumble recovery in an overtime win over Cumberland Valley, Pa.

Chris Rhodes

River Hill, lineman

The 6-foot-3, 240-pound two-way lineman excelled on a Hawks defense that limited All-Metro running back Scott Noble of Franklin to a season-low 36 rushing yards during a Class 3A state semifinal rout of the North regional champs.

From his position as a defensive end, the senior made 32 solo tackles, assisted on 23 others, had five tackles for lost yardage and two sacks.
