Worker dies after breaking up fight
A 39-year-old Spring Grove employee died yesterday after breaking up a patient fight at the state-run hospital for the mentally ill in Baltimore County, state police said. Lee McDuffy of Lansdowne, a care assistant, helped other hospital staff break up a fight between two patients about 8:30 a.m., state police said. During the incident, a 40-year-old man involved in the fight attacked staff members, police said. After the incident, McDuffy was taken to St. Agnes Hospital, where he died about 1 p.m., police said. The cause of McDuffy's death was not known, police said. The patient accused of assaulting McDuffy was placed under observation.

Balto. Co. man shot outside restaurant
A 31-year-old Baltimore County man was shot in Wilde Lake Village Center in Columbia yesterday afternoon, Howard County police said. Police said an unknown man shot Ata Caillet of Windsor Mill about 4 p.m. in the upper body outside the KFC restaurant in the 5400 block of Lynx Lane. Caillet was flown to Maryland Shock Trauma Center, where he was listed in serious but stable condition.
