Minister and TV actor to speak at fall Eisenhower Symposium

The 2006 Milton S. Eisenhower Symposium is planning two speakers this week as part of its fall series. The Rev. James Forbes will speak Thursday at the university's Interfaith Center on "A Partnership of Faith: Spirituality and the Youth." The next night, television star Jason Alexander will give a talk titled "America's Youth: The Best of Times, the Worst of Times, " in Shriver Hall at the Johns Hopkins University's Homewood campus. Leaders chosen for lawyers service


The board of directors of the Maryland Volunteer Lawyers Service has elected a new president and secretary. Christopher R. Rahl, senior vice president and senior counsel for Provident Bank of Maryland, will be the new president. A Towson resident, he has served on the board for three years. Lawrence D. Coppel, an attorney at the Baltimore law firm of Gordon, Feinblatt, Rothman, Hoffberger & Hollander LLC, will become secretary. A resident of Columbia, he has served on the board since 2003. The organization provides free and discounted legal assistance to low-income people in the state.

Baltimore: Fall cleanup

Participants sought for city-county effort

Baltimore officials are encouraging residents and community groups to sign up for the city's annual fall cleanup, which this year is dubbed "Spirit of '06 - Cooperation Knows No Boundaries." City officials have agreed with work with Baltimore County on both jurisdictions' cleanup events. For the Oct. 21 event, the Department of Public Works will provide gloves, rakes, brooms, shovels and debris removal, and officials with city agencies will be working on such activities as clearing storm drains, removing graffiti, trimming trees, boarding up vacant homes, cleaning vacant lots and removing rats.
