Football Games to Watch

A. Arundel County

Who -- No. 7 Arundel (2-0) @ No. 5 Broadneck (2-0)

When -- Tonight, 6:30

Outlook -- Although it's early, the showdown between the county's top two Class 4A teams could decide who takes the top seed in the East Region. Broadneck's defense has given up only 13 points in two games, but its secondary will be tested by the passing of Arundel junior Nick Elko (376 yards, seven touchdowns). Arundel's 3-5-3 defense will try to keep the Bruins' ball-control triple option, led by sophomore QB Kyle Colleran, off the field.

Who -- Severna Park (2-0) @ Southern (2-0)

When -- Tonight, 6:30

Outlook -- Severna Park, the defending county champion, puts its 16-game winning streak against county opponents on the line against the county's smallest public school. Southern's wing T and the Falcons' triple option are both run-oriented, but the junior quarterbacks, Southern's Zack Hiller and the Falcons' Pat Morrison, can throw when needed.

Baltimore City

Who -- No. 10 Edmondson (2-0) vs. No. 3 City (2-0) @ Poly

When -- Saturday, 7 p.m.

Outlook -- Edmondson returns to the site where it rallied in the season opener to beat Linganore of Frederick County, winner of four state titles. This is another challenge for the Red Storm (1-0 league) and second-year coach Dante Jones, who considers City coach George Petrides a mentor. Defending league champion City (1-0) has won 12 of its past 13 games.

Baltimore County

Who -- No. 15 New Town (2-0) @ Hereford (1-1)

When -- Today, 6:30 p.m.

Outlook -- New Town (2-0 league) used defense and deception in last week's come-from-behind, 6-3, county Class 2A-1A league win over Eastern Tech. The victory was secured when Justin Nicholson (five receptions, 142 yards) caught an 84-yard halfback-option in the fourth quarter. Hereford (1-0 league) looks to continue the momentum gained a week ago when it defeated Lansdowne, 51-6, to rebound from a season-opening, 10-7 loss to Perry Hall.

Who -- Catonsville (2-0) @ Franklin (2-0)

When -- Today, 4 p.m.

Outlook -- A year ago, Catonsville's 265-pound duo of Joe McNamara and Andrew Woizesko cleared the way for All-Metro running back Jaren Maybin. This afternoon, the tandem will attempt to block the path of Franklin RB Scott Noble. Each team is 1-0 in the county's Class 4A-3A.

Carroll County

Who -- No. 12 Westminster (2-0) @ Francis Scott Key (1-1)

When -- Tomorrow, 4:45 p.m.

Outlook -- Although the bulk of the players have graduated from last year's Class 3A state runner-up, Westminster has defeated two county foes: Class 2A state runner-up South Carroll, 12-0, and then-No. 14 Winters Mill, its cross-town rival, 21-7. Francis Scott Key is trying to rebound from a loss to Linganore.

Howard County

Who -- Atholton (1-1) @ Glenelg (1-1)

When -- Tomorrow, 3 p.m.

Outlook -- Atholton is coming off a 21-6 win over Howard, which was defeated by the same score by Glenelg.

Who -- Centennial (1-1) @ Wilde Lake (2-0)

When -- Tomorrow, 3 p.m.

Outlook -- This game features two breakout players: Centennial's RB-DB Justin Harris, who scored twice last week, and Wilde Lake's Zach Brown, who scored three times. The Eagles stunned then-No. 4 Long Reach, 25-18, with the help of Harris' game-clinching, 90-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.
