County to honor volunteers Thursday

County Executive James N. Robey and the Howard County Council will honor volunteers at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in the Banneker Room of the George Howard Building, 3430 Court House Drive, Ellicott City.

Forty-one people and 11 community organizations will be recognized, and Howard County's Volunteer of the Year will be announced.

The event will be carried live on Gtv, the Howard County government cable channel.

Help is needed for cookout Tuesday

The Athelas Institute Inc., an agency serving people with developmental disabilities and other needs, is seeking volunteers to help with its annual Cookout and Fun Day, to be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday at Patapsco Valley State Park.

Back-to-school event needs aid

The National Wildlife Federation is seeking volunteers for its back-to-school event at The Mall in Columbia, to be held from noon to 5 p.m. tomorrow.

Help is needed to set up activities, help with children's nature activities, hand out the organization's magazine and help clean up.

Group seeking mentors for kids

Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Central Maryland, which serves Baltimore and surrounding counties, is seeking volunteers to become mentors, friends and role models for children in need.

Volunteers must submit references and consent to a background check. Training is provided.

Farm-cleanup help sought for tomorrow

The Howard County Conservancy, 10520 Old Frederick Road, Woodstock, will hold a volunteer farm workday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. tomorrow. A short orientation will be held about the conservancy's volunteer opportunities before the farm cleanup begins.

Volunteers can help with gardening, farmhouse maintenance and education center administrative duties.
