Baltimore City Councilman Keiffer J. Mitchell Jr. is set to introduce a resolution Monday that calls on Maryland lawmakers to dissolve the city-state partnership that currently governs Baltimore's public schools.
Mitchell's resolution calls on state legislators to return full control of the city school system to the mayor and City Council. The General Assembly established the city-state partnership in 1997 to govern a system that at the time was financially unstable.
Mitchell said not much has changed since then and that it is time to try something new.
"It is time that we brought the responsibility back to where it belongs," Mitchell's proposed resolution states.
Mitchell said he intends to ask his colleagues to immediately vote on the resolution Monday rather than letting it go through the council's standard committee procedure.
"Having a committee to talk about it doesn't make sense," Mitchell said. "We've talked about it enough. We've talked about who's to blame, who's not to blame. Let's do something."
