FREDERICK EUGENE SYKES, 68, died Wednesday, August 2, 2006 in the Memorial Medical University, Savannah, Ga. He was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma on May 20, 1938. He was the son of the late Alfred W. Sykes and Dora Franklin Sykes. He was raised in Wichita, Kansas from age 9 until he joined the Air Force following high school graduation. After his first tour of duty he was a policeman in Las Vegas, Nevada for a short period before reenlisting in the Air Force serving first in France and then recalled during the Cuban crisis. Fred spent the remainder of his career working for CSX Railroad out of Jacksonville, Florida, retiring as Operations Manager in Baltimore, Maryland. After traveling the country in an RV, Fred and his wife of 27 years settled in Bluffton, S.C. in 2001 and found joy in the Music Ministry of the Gracetime Worship Team, as an active member of Church Of The Cross and a volunteer for the Church of the Cross food bank. He enjoyed bicycling, birding and deep sea fishing. He is survived by his wife, Margie S. Sykes of Bluffton, SC; one son, Timothy P. Sykes of Rincon, GA; one daughter, Susan S. Tolbert of San Diego, CA; one step son, Newton Ford of Jacksonville, FL; one brother, Bobby Sykes of Rogers, Arkansas; three grandchildren, Lauren, Andrew and Kirsten Sykes and several nieces and nephews. Memorial services will be held at 3:00 P.M. Friday, August 4, 2006 at the Church Of The Cross, Calhoun Street, Bluffton, SC. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Church of The Cross, P.O. Box 278, Bluffton, SC 29910. Sauls Funeral Home of Bluffton, SC is assisting the family with their arrangements.
