9/11 walk planned at Montpelier Mansion


The Free State Happy Wanderers Walking Club will sponsor a 9/11 memorial walk Sept. 11 at Montpelier Mansion, 9650 Muirkirk Road, in Laurel.

The 5K and 10K trails include a walk along residential sidewalks, and are suitable for wheelchairs and strollers. A commemorative button will be given to the first 200 walkers. Registration is to be held between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. Walks should be finished by 7 p.m.

Teddy bear show and sale is Aug. 6

Historic Savage Mill, 8600 Foundry St., Savage, will hold its 20th Summer Doll and Teddy Bear Show and Sale from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Aug. 6 in the mill's New Weave Building. Collectible teddy bears and handmade dolls will be for sale. Artists will show one-of-a-kind pieces -- antique and new teddy bears and dolls. Prices range from $12 to $5,000.

The show is sponsored by Bearing Gifts, a shop in the New Weave Building offering stuffed animals, toy bears and collectibles.

Writer's Circle -- The Savage branch library, 9525 Durness Lane, will sponsor a meeting of its Writer's Circle at 7 p.m. Aug. 14. Those who attend can offer mutual support and feedback to other aspiring authors. Registration is to begin tomorrow. 410-880-5980.

Free vehicle ID -- The North Laurel Community Policing Office, 9105G All Saints Road, will provide free vehicle identification number (VIN) etching from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Aug. 23, weather permitting. The unique VIN numbers will be engraved on all major pieces of glass in each car to deter thieves and help retrieve stolen vehicles. Those who attend can register for the Watch Your Car Program, a national vehicle theft-prevention effort. Some anti-theft devices will be distributed. For families -- Family and Children's Services is expanding its services at Whiskey Bottom Shopping Center in North Laurel with the goal of creating a "one-stop shop" of services for individuals and families in need of counseling or other assistance. Among the nonprofit organizations to join Family and Children's Services in North Laurel will be Grassroots Crisis Intervention Center, the Domestic Violence Center, FIRN (a Howard County nonprofit organization providing services to immigrants) and the Community Action Council. Family and Children's Services offers counseling, employee assistance, in-home services for elderly and disabled people and a "Healthy Families" program for first-time parents.

The Community Action Council, available from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesdays, offers help with eviction prevention, energy assistance and crisis intervention, and it maintains a food bank. Walk-ins are welcome. 301-498-7509 or 410-313-6440.

Kristin Lilly, FIRN's information and referral counselor, will be in North Laurel from noon to 6 p.m. Wednesdays. She is fluent in Spanish and can assist with medical bills, applying for a tax identification number (ITIN), legal referrals, birth certificates, housing, passports and other needs.
