TV has a curious abundance of 'uncanny sleuths'

THE BALTIMORE SUN

IT IS STARTING TO LOOK AS IF THIS MIGHT be the summer of the "uncanny" detective on cable TV. These sleuths are all seeking the truth in a landscape of lying liars who lie -- though they have some strange ways of finding it.

The big news, of course, is Kyra Sedgwick's setting new ratings records for cable drama in The Closer on TNT. Her character, Los Angeles Deputy Police Chief Brenda Leigh Johnson, was defined by the network in early news releases last year as having an "uncanny and intuitive ability" to detect lies and elicit confessions from crime suspects. Johnson's nickname came from her unerring ability to close cases in the interrogation room -- often using her own eccentricity to psych out suspects.
