Junior firefighters plan youth dance in Elkridge


The Elkridge Volunteer Fire Department's Junior Firefighters will sponsor a summer youth dance for ages 9 to 15 from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. July 22 at the firehouse, 6275 Old Washington Road, Elkridge.

Tickets, available only at the door, are $7.

Registration under way -- Hollifield Station Elementary School is accepting registration from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Wednesdays. Kindergarteners must have been born between Oct. 1, 2000, and Sept. 1, 2001. Parents must be residents of Howard County and live in the Hollifield Station School district. A picture identification, current lease or deed, current utility bill, pupil's birth certificate and proof of immunization (unless a religious exemption is claimed) are required at registration. Chess club -- Elkridge Young Adult Chess Club for ages 11 to 17 will meet from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Wednesdays at the Elkridge library, 6540 Washington Blvd. No experience is necessary, and players of all skill levels are welcome. Snacks will be provided. 410-313-5077.

For teens -- The Miller branch library, 9421 Frederick Road, Ellicott City, will hold a meeting of its Teen Advisory Board from 3:30 p.m. to 4:45 p.m. Tuesday. Teens ages 13 and older are invited to meet with friends, have a snack and share ideas about library programs and new books. The group meets on the first Tuesday of each month. Registration is requested.

The library's Teen 'Zine editorial committee will meet from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. July 17 at the library. Future journalists, poets, cartoonists and publishers, ages 13 to 18, are invited to join the staff of the library's new teen magazine. Members write and collect stories, edit, proofread and design the online quarterly. Registration is required.

Heidi Strominger of the STTAR Center will discuss Internet safety with youngsters ages 11 to 14 and their parents from 6:45 p.m. to 7:45 p.m. July 19. Participants can learn how to surf and blog safely. Registration is required. 410-313-1950.

Also at the library -- The Miller branch library, 9421 Frederick Road, Ellicott City, will sponsor a program on basic computer skills and terminology, "Demystify Your Computer," at 11 a.m. Wednesday. Registration is required.

The library will offer a get-together for beginning and experienced needle-workers at 10 a.m. July 20. Participants will have an opportunity to trade tips and get ahead on their work; take supplies and current projects. Registration is not required.

The library offers an English Conversation Club, for people who speak English as a second or third language, from 7:45 p.m. to 8:45 p.m. Mondays. First-time participants must register in advance. 410-313-1950.

For girls -- The Elkridge library is offering Girls Group, a chance for girls ages 12 to 15 to meet and talk about favorite books, movies and music, and try a craft. Speakers will talk about matters of interest to girls. The group meets from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. alternate Fridays. Registration is requested. 410-313-5088.

Legal services -- Attorney Valerie Rocco will be at Ellicott City Senior Center, 9401 Frederick Road, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. July 26 for the 60 Plus Wills and Legal Screening Program. Services to be offered include drawing up simple wills, powers of attorney, living wills, small estates and deed changes. The program is open to Howard County residents ages 60 and older. The cost is on a sliding scale. Appointments, which are required, should be scheduled as far in advance as possible. The program, sponsored by the Howard County Department of Citizen Services' Office on Aging, is available on the fourth Wednesday of each month. 410-313-1400.
