County working to fix Rosedale sewer break

Baltimore County public works officials said yesterday they are hoping to have a broken sewer line fixed by today.

County officials discovered sewage flowing from a 36-inch main near the Red House Run Pumping Station in the Rosedale section of the county Thursday.

A "water contact alert" was issued for Back River because of the break, officials said, discouraging residents from water activities such as swimming and wind surfing.

The beach at Rocky Point State Park has been closed until further notice. The park remains open. It is unclear when the beach will reopen.

Recreational users of Bird, Gunpowder, Middle, and Back rivers and their tributaries as well as Bear and Dundee creeks should minimize contact with waters that are cloudy or debris-laden.

Signs have been posted at points of public access to Back River and distributed to marinas in the area.

Officials believe recent heavy rains prompted the sewage overflow.

County Council

Internet manager to run for seat

George T. Kapusinski, an Internet technology manager from Catonsville, said yesterday he has filed to run for the County Council seat in District 1.

Kapusinski will run as a Republican for the seat held by Stephen G. Samuel Moxley, a Catonsville Democrat in the final year of his third term. Moxley has filed for re-election.

Kapusinski, 40, has never run for political office.

"I'm involved because I'm very, very concerned about the crime in the community," Kapusinski said.

Songwriter to be honored

Dillon O'Brian, a national songwriter for such artists as Mariah Carey and Trisha Yearwood, will return to his hometown for an 11:30 a.m. concert Monday.

O'Brian, who grew up on Paradise Avenue and graduated from Mount St. Joseph High School in 1978, will be honored by Baltimore County Executive James T. Smith Jr., who will declare the day "Dillon O'Brian Day."

The concert will be held in Catonsville's Village on Frederick Road near Little Phoenix Restaurant and Chef Paolino's.

O'Brian, who bought his first guitar from Bill's Music shop, has written songs for artists including Brian Wilson, Ringo Starr, Bonnie Raitt, Amy Grant and the Neville Brothers. Now living in Los Angeles, O'Brian has also written theme songs for the NBC comedies The Office and My Name is Earl, and his song "Fearless Love" is featured in the film Sideways.

"He reminds us all why Catonsville is rightfully known as Music City, Maryland," Smith said in a statement.
