Gov. Robert L. Ehrlich Jr. announced school board appointments yesterday for Anne Arundel and Harford counties.
In Anne Arundel, Ehrlich tapped Victor E. Bernson Jr., a 41-year-old White House attorney, to succeed Paul G. Rudolph, who is stepping down after his second five-year term.
Bernson, a Millersville resident, has worked as general counsel for the White House Office of Administration since 2004. His two high-school-age children attend St. Mary's, a private school in Annapolis, but Bernson has said that this would not affect his ability to serve on the school board. He received a majority of votes -- 60 out of 117 -- from the county's school board nominating convention in May. Bernson was appointed for a five-year term.
Ehrlich also appointed Brittany Walker, a senior at Old Mill High School in the fall, as the student school board member.
In Harford County, Patrick L. Hess was reappointed to the county Board of Education to serve a five-year term. Hess is a lifelong resident of Harford County and is president and chief executive officer of Operations Management Inc. and W.D.P.D. Inc. Hess is a former Jarrettsville Elementary School business partner and a church volunteer. He is a graduate of North Harford High School and the Culinary Institute of America.
