What is your favorite Meryl Streep film and why? The Academy Award-winning actress stars in Robert Altman's A Prairie Home Companion, which opened in theaters this month. And today, her next movie - The Devil Wears Prada - opens nationwide.
WHAT YOU SAY
I find it impossible to pinpoint a single film in which she starred since she adapts herself and excels in every role that she portrays.
FREDA GARELICK, BALTIMORE
Because I enjoy impersonations and accents, my favorite Meryl Streep role is Francesca in The Bridges of Madison County.
The mannerisms, gestures, expressions of the Italian housewife transplanted to Iowa were jaw-dropping real.
Meryl Streep's presence in a film has guaranteed high-bar performances by the other cast members. One unfortunate exception though was Out of Africa, where she had to carry the scenes with wooden Robert Redford.
FRANCES L. LYNCH, BOONSBORO
While everything Meryl Streep has done onscreen has been pure cinematic magic, nothing compares with her performance in Sophie's Choice. I truly believe Ms. Streep's work in that masterpiece of a film stands as the greatest female performance in the history of film. Beyond her flawless Polish dialect - not to mention extended sequences delivered in fluent Polish - Streep presents a landmark performance that captures and personifies a depth of human tragedy that has never, before or since, been achieved.
