Independence Day celebration in song
The second Greater Columbia Musical Independence Day Observance will be held at 6:30 p.m. tomorrow at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 4100 St. Johns Lane, Ellicott City.
Performers will include the Mormon Choir of Washington; Ellicott Brass; Our Lady of Perpetual Help traditional, contemporary and children's choirs; and the Men's Chorus of the First Baptist Church of Guilford.
Those who attend will be invited to join in prayer and in singing American hymns in commemoration of Independence Day.
Journeys releases liturgical book
Journeys Community has published a book, Seeking the Spirit: How to Create a Community of Seekers. The book describes the history of the Columbia-based group and its nontraditional liturgy, which draws on many cultures and faith traditions and includes readings, music and film clips from sources such as Mother Teresa, Thich Nhat Hanh and Stevie Wonder.
The book includes a hands-on guide to establishing a "seeker ministry" on the Journeys model for those searching for God and unsatisfied by traditional answers. Included are sample worship services and other resources.
Journeys Community meets at 10 a.m. Sundays in the second-floor auditorium of Vantage House Life-Care Retirement Community, 5400 Vantage Point Road in Town Center, Columbia. In recognition of Independence Day, Tuesday, this week's theme is "How do we free our spirits?"
Glen Mar church plans Bible school
Glen Mar United Methodist Church, 8430 Glen Mar Road, Ellicott City, will hold three sessions of its vacation Bible school, "Arctic Edge."
Sessions, for children ages 4 through fifth grade, will be offered from 9 a.m. to noon and 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. July 10-14 and 9 a.m. to noon July 17-21.
Admission is free.

Women's Torah class at Lubavitch Center
The Lubavitch Center for Jewish Education, 770 Howes Lane, Columbia, is offering a free Torah class for women, led by Rebbetzin Chanie Baron, at noon Wednesdays. Beginners and advanced students are welcome.
