Pets on Parade
The lowdown -- Show off your pet and patriotic spirit at the American
Visionary Art Museum's Fourth of July Visionary Pets on Parade. Owners are encouraged to dress up along with their pets and compete for trophies in a variety of categories. After the parade, pets will have a chance to show off their talents for prizes. Baggies and water will be provided, and all types of pets are welcome.
If you go -- Pet registration is at 9:30 a.m. and the parade starts at 10 on Tuesday at the American Visionary Art Museum at 800 Key Highway. The event is free. Owners are responsible for pets' behavior and bodily functions. Call 410-244-1900 or go to avam.org.
The lowdown -- Enjoy the breeze on the Patapsco River and views of the skyline and the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Bridge on the Twilight Canoe Escape trip, leaving Saturday morning from Middle Branch Park. These canoe trips run frequently throughout the summer, and pre-registration is required, preferably at least 24 hours in advance.

The lowdown -- Who knew so many Ph.D.s could groove? Grab your picnic blankets and lawn chairs and listen to the big-band group the Rhythm Doctors, Saturday night at the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum's Big Band night. This 17-member band of chemists and engineers from Wilmington, Del., will perform an evening of swing under the stars.
If you go -- Big Band Night is from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday at the Tolchester Beach Bandstand at Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum, 213 N. Talbot St. in St. Michaels. Admission is $5-$10.
