Hyattsville man admits to role in scheme to smuggle cocaine

A 39-year-old Hyattsville man admitted in federal court in Greenbelt yesterday that he was part of a drug-smuggling scheme to sneak cocaine into the country from Guatemala by storing the drugs in car batteries.

On the eve of his trial, George E. Smith pleaded guilty to conspiracy to distribute 5 kilograms or more of cocaine and to being a felon in possession of ammunition. In court documents, Smith acknowledged that from 2001 through early 2004 he was part of the drug-smuggling group.

He could face a maximum sentence of life in prison when he returns to court Sept. 25.
