Man gets 27 years in killing

A 31-year-old Baltimore man was sentenced yesterday to 27 years in prison for the killing last year of a man during an attempted robbery, the city state's attorney's office said.

Leroy Young of the 2400 block of Loyola Northway was convicted by a jury last month in Baltimore Circuit Court of second-degree murder and the use of a handgun during the commission of a violent crime, said Margaret T. Burns, a spokeswoman for the city state's attorney's office.

Young, according to prosecutors, was attempting to rob the victim, Terrence Smith of the 5200 block of Bosworth Ave., on May 14 last year in the 5000 block of Norwood Ave. They struggled, and Smith was shot twice.
