Jeanne H. West, 88, homemaker and volunteer


Jeanne H. West, a homemaker and volunteer, died Thursday at Greater Baltimore Medical Center of complications from surgery. She was 88.

She was born Jeanne Harrison in Danville, Va., and as a child moved with her family to Ruxton. She was a graduate of the old Greenwood School and made her debut in 1935 at the Bachelors Cotillon.

During World War II, Mrs. West was a Red Cross volunteer, and for many years she volunteered at what is now Keswick Multi-Care Center.

Mrs. West enjoyed golf and was an avid bridge player. She also liked to travel and had visited Russia, South Africa, South America and Europe.

Since 1994, the former longtime Green Spring Valley resident had lived at the Brightwood retirement community in Lutherville.

She was married for 66 years to John H. West Jr., former chief executive officer of Enterprise Fuel Co., who died last year.

Mrs. West was an active communicant and treasurer of the Altar Guild at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Owings Mills, where services were held yesterday.

Surviving are a son, John H. West III of Baltimore; three daughters, Jeanne West Riggs of Nantucket, Mass., Mary Harrison West Neblett of Baltimore and Anne Wynne West of Chicago; 11 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
