What sites do you recommend in and around Houston for a visit this summer?
You have plenty of choices, starting with the Houston Museum District (houstonmuseumdistrict.org), just a short walk from downtown. You will find museums of fine arts, contemporary craft, natural science, photography, the Holocaust and others. Nearby is the Houston Zoo.
Downtown's theater district has resident companies in ballet, opera, symphony and theater. The Alley Theatre (alleytheatre.org) performs through the summer.
A half-hour south of downtown, visitors can explore the past, present and future of space flight at Space Center Houston (spacecenter.org). Nearby, Kemah Boardwalk (kemahboardwalk.com) is a 35-acre entertainment complex on Galveston Bay, with carnival rides, shopping and dining. The San Jacinto Monument and Museum, 20 minutes east of Houston, has the world's tallest war memorial column and the Battleship Texas, the first U.S. battleship to mount anti-aircraft guns.
Can you tell me the best means of transportation and the approximate cost of going from Ataturk International Airport in Istanbul, Turkey, to the cruise port?
It takes about 45 minutes to get from the airport to the cruise ship port, depending on traffic. We are told that taxis are safe and plentiful, and fares are between 40 and 50 Turkish new lira, about $27 to $35. One other option: ITS Tourism in Turkey (itstourism.com) offers transportation to several cruise ports. Go to the Web site for fares.
