Developers backing Grassroots campaign

Howard County developers and homebuilders have pledged support to the campaign to renovate and expand Grassroots Crisis Intervention Center.

The Developers and Homebuilders Shelter Initiative, led by Grassroots Renovation and Expansion Campaign co-chair Steven Koren of Koren Development and Rich Thometz of Hailey Development, has attracted 20 donors. The real estate industry initiative is among a number of campaigns contributing to the Grassroots capital campaign.

Elm Street Development has pledged $17,500 and Hailey Development, KasCon, Koren Development, Lennar and US Homes, and Ryland Homes each have pledged $15,000. The firms will have shelter rooms named in their honor.

Pledges and contributions have been made by Gaines & Co. and Beazer Homes ($10,000 each); Ryan Homes ($7,500); Grayson Homes and Harkins Builders ($5,000 each); Richard Talkin /Don Reuwer ($5,000); Rachuba Family Foundation ($3,000); Columbia Builders, Gray and Son Inc., Dale Thompson Builders, and Winchester Homes ($1,000 each.)

The renovation and expansion project for the county's shelter for homeless people will more than double the building's size, improve and upgrade kitchens and address plumbing problems. Shelter rooms will be increased to 55 from 32.

Grassroots also is headquarters of the county's Mobile Crisis Team, which responds to psychiatric emergencies and family crises.
