A scout's take

On Hanley Ramirez, Florida's 22-year-old rookie shortstop, who is batting .273 with 19 steals and 50 runs scored

Defense -- He's got quickness, great instincts with his feet and hands and has a plus arm. He's just instinctive. He gets great jumps and has tremendous range and arm strength. He'll be in the top class of shortstops. He'll be in the discussion as one of the game's best shortstops in the next two or three years.

Attitude -- He was a little maligned in his makeup with the Red Sox, but this is a great, great kid. He has a great work ethic, has fun playing and is a great teammate. The Marlins just love him in terms of attitude.

Overall -- Wow, you are talking about a special player. He can run. He can hit. He has some pop. He's an All-Star caliber shortstop, and when you can pick up a young shortstop like that in this game, I'd say that is pretty good.

Note: "A scout's take" features one major league scout's opinion on a particular player each week. A revolving roundtable of scouts is used. Because of potential tampering, the scouts are anonymous.

Say what?

"I don't know. I don't have eyes in the back of my helmet."

Cleveland Indians first baseman- outfielder Eduardo Perez on whether the Randy Johnson pitch that almost hit him Wednesday was suggested by New York Yankees catcher Jorge Posada, who had been hit earlier by a pitch

Numbing number

The number of big leaguers to have played 2,000 games with the New York Yankees. Outfielder Bernie Williams joined the list Tuesday. The other four - Mickey Mantle, Lou Gehrig, Yogi Berra and Babe Ruth - are Hall of Famers.

Interleague play rages on

We're knee-deep in interleague play and that includes two bad National League East teams heading to Camden Yards. Orioles outfielder Jeff Conine, known as Mr. Marlin, gets a look at the new version of his old Florida club in a three-game series starting Tuesday. Then the Orioles host their pseudo-rival, the Washington Nationals, for a three-game series starting Friday. The best overall matchup happens on the south side of Chicago, where the White Sox host the St. Louis Cardinals starting Tuesday and then have a reunion of 2005 World Series teams with a weekend series against the Houston Astros.
