Nonprofit presents anti-smoking event, The Millennium Community Outreach Institute Inc., a nonprofit that provides health education to minority and low-income communities, will sponsor "Not in Mama's Kitchen!" - a presentation on the hazards of second-hand smoke and the power of mothers to establish a smoke-free environment in the home and in places of worship.

Brenda Bell Caffee, creator of "Not in Mama's Kitchen!" will be the presenter.

The event, which includes lunch, has been funded by a grant from the Howard County Health Department. It will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 28 at St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Congregation at the Wilde Lake Interfaith Center, 10431 Twin Rivers Road, Columbia.

Meditation event set at Tai Sophia

Donna Thomson, author of The Vibrant Life: Simple Meditations to Use Your Energy Effectively, will lead a one-day workshop on meditation that draws on Zen Buddhist practices to offer simple techniques to reduce stress and increase energy level.

The workshop will be offered from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. June 24 at the Tai Sophia Institute, 7750 Montpelier Road, Laurel.

Peer support -- The Center for Breast Care at Howard County General Hospital will offer a new support program for women with breast cancer. Survivors Offering Support is to be an all-volunteer network of breast cancer survivors who will be matched with newly diagnosed women for support throughout each patient's treatment. The center is recruiting breast cancer survivors to serve as mentors. Volunteers must provide a release from two doctors attesting to their emotional readiness to mentor and they must attend an SOS training session that includes information on therapeutic listening and communications, diagnosis and treatments, patient advocacy and resources. NAMI support -- NAMI - Howard County is offering a peer-based group for people who are living with mental illness at 6:30 p.m. on the last Tuesday of each month at Wilde Lake Interfaith Center, 10431 Twin Rivers Road, Columbia.

A support group for parents and caregivers of children and teenagers with emotional or behavioral problems meets at 7:30 p.m. on the last Wednesday of each month in the Patuxent Room of the Faulkner Ridge Center, 10598 Marble Fawn Court, Columbia.

A group for family and friends of adults with mental illness meets on the second Tuesday of each month in the Day Room at Harmony Hall Retirement Community, 6336 Cedar Lane, Columbia. The groups are free and are open to non-NAMI members. 410-772-9300.

Classes, services

Aquatic fitness classes -- Aquatic fitness classes will be offered by the Central Maryland Rehabilitation Center at the Howard Community College pool. Sessions are held Monday and Friday afternoons. The cost is $5 a class. 410-312-9000.

Losing weight -- Individualized weight-loss counseling with a registered dietitian is offered by Howard County General Hospital between 9:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays at the hospital. Appointments, which cost $25 for a half-hour visit, must be scheduled in advance. 410-740-7601.

Babysitting class -- The Columbia Teen Center, 5851 Robert Oliver Place, Columbia, will offer a "Babysitting Made Easy" class, for teenagers ages 11 to 14, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. tomorrow. First aid, emergency procedures, age-appropriate activities and other babysitting skills will be taught. A certificate is awarded. The cost is $40 for Columbia residents; $48 for nonresidents.
