Pre-primary candidate forums

The Association of Community Services will hold three pre-primary candidate forums from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. today, June 28 and July 12 at the Oakland Mills Interfaith Center, 5885 Robert Oliver Place, Columbia.

Candidates for county executive and County Council will express their views on housing, health, transportation, human services and other issues facing Howard County at today's forum.

Candidates for the Howard County state delegation will speak June 28, and candidates for school board July 12.

Deadline to change affiliation is nearing

The deadline to change political party affiliation before the gubernatorial primary election is 9 p.m. Monday.

There is an exception for any registered voter who has moved from one Maryland jurisdiction to another since the last general election, Nov. 7, 2004. These voters can change party affiliation until the registration books close at 9 p.m. Aug. 22, the deadline to register to vote.

The 2006 gubernatorial primary election will be held Sept. 12; the gubernatorial general election, Nov. 7.

Stars & Stripes senior picnic

The Howard County Department of Recreation and Parks and the Howard County Office on Aging will sponsor a "Stars & Stripes Annual Seniors Picnic," for adults ages 55 and older, from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. today.

Those who attend are encouraged to wear red, white and blue, and enjoy live music, grilled dishes, games and a chance to socialize. Tickets, which cost $1, are available at the door.

Group postpones basketball tourney

The Columbia Association's Teen Advisory Committee has postponed the basketball tournament honoring the memory of Dessalines Jacques, who died in a traffic accident.

The event, originally scheduled for Friday, June 16, will be held in October at a date to be determined.

CA board seeking applicants for panel

The Columbia Association's board of directors is seeking applicants to fill three vacancies on the Environmental Matters Committee, a subcommittee of the association's Open Space Committee. Members of the subcommittee will advise the Open Space Committee and the board on environmental issues, interests, opportunities and concerns related to Columbia's open space.

Applicants, who must live on Columbia Association-assessed property, should have a background in the areas of natural resource management or policy, or parks, grounds or outdoor recreation planning and management.
