In capital, optimism on rates

Lawmakers and BGE officials grew hopeful yesterday that they could reach consensus on electricity rate relief, while Gov. Robert L. Ehrlich Jr. blasted a proposed legislative plan as blatant election year politicking and dangerous to the utility's fiscal health.

BGE officials participated in a marathon committee hearing in Annapolis on a bill that will form the backbone of a special session set to begin today. Company leaders emerged saying they believe the process will result in a measure that will limit the immediate impact of a planned 72 percent rate increase while keeping BGE financially sound.
