Capital Gazette wins special Pulitzer Prize citation for coverage of newsroom shooting that killed five



ON June 3, 2006, JOHN W. ROY, MD, of Ellicott City, peacefully at home after a long and courageous battle with melanoma. Born May 1, 1920 in Pittsfield, MA, he was the son of Augustus Roy and Celia Mc Gee, and grew up in Lennox,. He graduated from Syracuse University, and received his medical degree from Albany Medical School in 1946. He was a U.S. Navy Medical Officer from 1946 to 1949, and traveled the Mediterranean. His residency was at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in New York City from 1949 to 1952. He practiced obstetrics and gynecology in the New York, New Jersy area between 1953 and 1986. His old fashioned humanitarian bedside manner and compassion brought several generations of mothers and daughters into his care for over a 35 year span. In 1950 he married the late Susan Francis Davis, also a Navy Lieutenant, and commenced upon a 55 year grand love affair. He is survived by his two children, Alison Roy-Harrison of Ellicott City, MD, Ann Roy of South Hampton, MA, his sons in law, William Roy-Harrison and Thomas Uzar, and his siblings, Margie Templeton of Redlands, CA, Edward Roy of Northfield, MN, and Augustus Roy of Lennox MA, and three grandchildren, Jessie, Nicole and William Roy-Harrison. A Memorial service will be held at the Unitarian Universalist Church in Williamsburg, VA, on Sunday June 18th at 3:30 p.m. Contributions may be made to the Unitarian Universalist Church, 3051 Iron Bound Road, Williamsburg, VA 23185.
