"God's Aloha" service is Tuesday

First Evangelical Lutheran Church, 3604 Chatham Road, Ellicott City, will offer a Communion service in honor of those mourned by families and friends. The service, "God's Aloha," will be held at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. Psychologist Carlo DiClemente of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County will speak; the presiding minister will be the Rev. Gigie Sijera-Grant, associate pastor at the church.

The service is called "God's Aloha" to signify the presence of the divine in times of both joy and sorrow; the greeting "aloha" is used to mark times of coming together and separating.

Hawaiian shirts are optional. A reception is planned after the service.

Sonya Starr selected for STAR program

Rabbi Sonya Starr of the Columbia Jewish Congregation has been selected to participate in a pilot program of STAR, or Synagogues: Transformation and Renewal, a national foundation working to foster innovation and leadership in synagogues.

"From Good to Great" is designed for midcareer rabbis who want to renew their commitment to the ideals that brought them into their profession and learn new strategies for leadership and success.

The program, a collaboration between STAR and Gratz College, is adapted from the Good to Great books by Jim Collins. Starr is one of 17 rabbis from across the country chosen to participate.

Gospel Sounds Duet to perform June 17

The Gospel Sounds Duet, featuring Steve and Apryl Caldwell, will present a program of Christian music at 6 p.m. June 17 at Alberta Gary Memorial United Methodist Church, 9405 Guilford Road, Columbia.

Two churches slate Hymn-fest Sunday

Grace Episcopal and Trinity Episcopal churches in Elkridge will hold a Hymn-fest at 3 p.m. Sunday at Trinity Episcopal Church, 7474 Washington Blvd., Elkridge.

'Vision of Jesus' seminar scheduled

Bon Secours Spiritual Center, 1525 Marriottsville Road, Marriottsville, will offer a seminar, "The Vision of Jesus in a Rapidly Changing World," from 5 p.m. June 25 to 4 p.m. June 29.

The Rev. Diarmuid O'Murchu, a priest and social psychologist who has spent his life in social ministry with those who are grieving, ill, homeless or refugees, will lead the seminar.

Christ Church Link, a program of Christ Episcopal Church in Columbia, offers referrals to service agencies in Howard County and Maryland.

Callers can be referred to agencies that help prevent evictions and utility cutoffs, provide food and help with employment and other needs.

Service hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays; 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesdays; and 8 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursdays.
