Defaced lawn seen as hate crime

Howard County police are investigating as a hate crime an incident in which weed killer or some other chemical was used to scorch a swastika and the words "white power" into an Ellicott City resident's front lawn, a department spokeswoman said yesterday. The Stonehouse Drive resident, who police said is a member of a racial minority, called police about 9 p.m. Monday. The swastika was about 1 square foot and the words 1 foot by 4 feet wide. Police are offering a $500 reward and ask anyone with information to contact them at 410-313-3200.

Carroll County: Mount Airy

Deputy rescues man from house fire

A Carroll County deputy sheriff rescued a man from a fire in his house near Mount Airy just after midnight yesterday, according to Sgt. Phil Kasten, a spokesman for the sheriff's office.

The deputy found William R. Lockey, 56, of the 2200 block of Flag Marsh Road trying to extinguish flames on his living room sofa and suffering from smoke inhalation, officials said. Lockey had fallen asleep on the sofa while smoking a cigarette, Kasten said.

The deputy, Cpl. Bruce VanLeuvan, was patrolling the rural area when he saw flames through the window of Lockey's small rancher, Kasten said.

Other than the sofa, Lockey's home wasn't damaged, and he refused treatment from the Mount Airy fire company, spokesman Doug Alexander said.
