BOYS PLAYER OF THE YEAR
The sophomore had a perfect season, going 21-0 to win the Howard County, regional and state titles. Nguyen, who was fourth in the state last year, upset Jared Pinsky (Churchill) in the state semifinals and Chris Goodwin (Rockville) in the state final. They were the top two seeds in the tournament, and Nguyen became the first Wilde Lake individual state champion.
Burgin won a Baltimore County title at No. 2 singles and then knocked off Catonsville's Matt McDaniel en route to a regional championship. The freshman, who is the nephew of former pro Elise Burgin, then won a state match.
The junior joined Gilman's team this year and quickly became on of the area's best players. Kelly won the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference No. 1 singles title and was part of a Gilman trio that never lost a match.
Mason won the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference No. 2 singles title. The senior was an integral part of a solid Gilman singles lineup that helped the Greyhounds win the conference title.
Justin Lui and Andrew Lutz
They combined to win the Baltimore County and regional titles before finishing third in the state, the highest finish for an area player or team. Both freshmen, they should be two of the area's top players for the next three years.
GIRLS PLAYER OF THE YEAR
C. Milton Wright
She repeats as All-Metro Player of the Year after having another outstanding season. The senior won the Upper Chesapeake Bay Athletic Conference and regional singles title for a second straight year. Ahn's only loss came in the state semifinals, but she bounced back to win the consolation final and take third place, finishing with a 92-6 career record.
A freshman, Kachay made an immediate impact at No. 1 singles. She defeated Hereford's Katherine Charchalis to win the county title and went on to take the regional crown.
The sophomore helped lead Atholton's girls to a Howard County team title. Quintero also won the individual county and regional titles, then made it to the state quarterfinals, finishing 19-1.
Wu won a second straight Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland championship last fall. The junior scored a straight-sets victory over Roland Park's Lindsay Katz for the No. 1 singles title.
Courtney Evans and Callie Gillen
Evans, a junior, and Gillen, a senior, captured the Carroll County doubles crown and then won the regionals. In addition, they won a first-round match at the state tournament

COACH OF THE YEAR
Dresner lost several key players from last year's team, but the young Panthers rebounded to take seven championships in the Baltimore County tournament, plus four more in the regionals and a third-place finish in the state tournament. Pikesville won the county title for the 39th time in 41 years.
