PERFORMER OF THE YEAR
The senior set two records at the Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland championships, and the feeling among several coaches is that those marks will last a long time. Johnson captured the 1,600 in 4 minutes, 56.20 seconds, which shattered the previous record of 5:17.45 set by Towson Catholic's Devon Williams in 2004.
Johnson also won the 3,200 in 10:54.0, smashing the previous mark of 11:49.92 set by Severn's Emily Oliver in 2005. Johnson added two more gold medals when she claimed the 800 in 2:13.60 and ran a leg of the 3,200 relay squad that finished in 9:58.26.
Johnson, who also picked up victories in the 800 and 1,600 at the MRW Northern Virginia Invitational, was the city's Runner of the Year in cross country and is planning on competing in cross country and track at Princeton.
COACH OF THE YEAR
The Doves were thought to be finished this season after watching their 16-year reign atop the Baltimore City championships come to an abrupt halt by Mervo. But rather than allowing his athletes to dwell on that disappointment, Molyneaux shifted the team's focus to the Class 3A North regional meet and state championships.
The strategy worked, as Western repeated as regional and state champions. The Doves' state crown is their third since 2002.
