Montgomery jury convicts Muhammad
A jury convicted John Allen Muhammad, 45, of murder in the 2002 sniper shootings that left six people dead in Montgomery County. Circuit Judge James L. Ryan sentenced him to six consecutive life terms with no possibility of parole.
Maryland reverts to old BGE plan
State utility regulators said a judge's order striking down a plan to defer part of BGE's 72 percent rate increase has forced them to at least temporarily revive an earlier plan that features a smaller rate cut and charges customers interest. The decision will mean less savings for customers come July. Meanwhile, Constellation Energy Group disclosed that it was by far the largest winning bidder in an auction to supply electricity to BGE - a fact that might bolster critics who contend deregulation has failed to foster competition.
Baltimore City schools official fired
The chief operating officer of the Baltimore school system, Eric T. Letsinger, was fired as school officials continued to investigate accusations of misconduct, including an abortive plan to use system funds for a fishing junket.
Port renamed in honor of Bentley
The state renamed its public marine terminals the Helen Delich Bentley Port of Baltimore, creating a permanent legacy for the former congresswoman, journalist and consultant.
Status quo in Carroll County
The state's highest court ruled that Carroll County must keep its current government structure intact despite the passage two years ago of a referendum calling for election of five commissioners by district. The Court of Appeals said that only the state legislature can establish boundaries for the new commissioner districts, which legislators failed to do so this year. As a result, three commissioners will be elected at large in November.
President Bush pays visit to area
Gov. Robert L. Ehrlich Jr. welcomed President Bush to a Baltimore-area fundraiser that Republican officials say brought in $1 million for the Maryland Republican Party. Absent was Lt. Gov. Michael S. Steele, a U.S. Senate candidate, who was at a fundraiser in Las Vegas.
