An unkind cut to Tchaikovsky's 'Manfred'


Recent biographers argue that Tchaikovsky wasn't nearly as tormented by his sexuality as was long believed, but found ways of adjusting, even flourishing, in the gay subculture of his time.

Still, the composer never seems to have lost the feeling of being an outsider, a feeling that haunts some of his greatest works.
