FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- A child's shriek startled Qinuo Van Dyk just as her husband leaped off their 15th-floor Miami Beach hotel room balcony to his death.
The stunned mother walked out to the balcony and looked down to see his body on the roof above the third-floor mezzanine -- right next to the pajama-clad bodies of her 4- and 8-year-old boys.
That's when she started screaming.
"It's so horrific; it's almost unbelievable," said Officer Bobby Hernandez, spokesman for Miami Beach police.
Police are baffled after Edward Van Dyk, a practicing oncologist vacationing with his wife from Alton, Ill., for their 10th anniversary, tossed their two children to their deaths and leaped to his own. Hernandez said the family arrived at the Loews on Tuesday. They'd gone to the beaches and planned to return home today.
He said Qinuo Van Dyk heard one of the children screaming about 8:30 a.m. and caught a glimpse of her husband, 43, plummeting off the balcony.
Hernandez said the couple had marital problems in the past six months, "but nothing that would indicate he would commit such a horrible act."
According to Edward Van Dyk's profile on at the Alton Memorial Hospital Web site, he has been practicing radiation oncology since 2001 and moved to Alton sometime in 2005.
