Evan Kay scored the go-ahead goal late in the third period as visiting UMBC defeated Brown, 6-4, in the season opener for both teams yesterday.
It was UMBC's first season-opening win since 2003 and its first opening win on the road since a 9-8 overtime win over Navy in 2002.
The Retrievers built a 3-0 lead and never trailed, holding the Bears scoreless for the first 26:26.
Kay, Drew Westervelt and Andy Gallagher each scored twice for the Retrievers.
Brown erased a 4-1 deficit with three scores in a four-minute span of the third quarter, but Kay's unassisted goal with 3:29 left in the period put the Retrievers back ahead for good.
Freshman Jeremy Blevins made nine saves for UMBC.

No. 13 North Carolina 8, Air Force 6 -- The Tar Heels (2-0) overcame a 3-2 halftime deficit and outscored the Falcons (0-2) 6-0 in the third period en route to the win in the opening game of the Pioneer Face-Off Classic in Denver.
Virginia Wesleyan 12, Goucher 10 -- Despite 12 saves from Austin Hayes, the Gophers (1-1) fell to the host Marlins (1-1).
St. Mary's 9, Roanoke 5 -- Zack Thomas had two goals and one assist as the host Seahawks (2-0) defeated the Maroons (1-1).
