Carroll boy, 10, rescued from 6-foot hole

A 10-year-old Carroll County boy was flown to a hospital yesterday after being rescued from a 6-foot- deep hole in the backyard of a house, authorities said.

The boy, whose name was not disclosed, fell into the hole in the rear of a house in the 6500 block of Macbeth Way in Eldersburg about 2:45 p.m. and was unable to free himself when his legs became twisted, making it impossible for anyone to pull him out, said Bill Rehkopf, a member of the Freedom District Fire Department in Eldersburg.

The Carroll County Advanced Technical Rescue Team pumped warm air into the hole while it was being stabilized, and an adjacent hole was being dug for a rescuer to reach him, Rehkopf said.

Nearly three hours later, the boy was freed, taken by ambulance to Carrolltowne Elementary School and transferred to a state police helicopter for a flight to the pediatric intensive care unit at Johns Hopkins Hospital, Rehkopf said, describing the boy's injuries as not life-threatening.
